Guinea pigs are chatty, gentle and full of personality. These basics set them up for a good life.
Guinea pigs are social
They are happiest with a bonded companion of their own species, so many experts recommend keeping them in pairs or small groups.
Give them room
A spacious cage or C&C enclosure with a solid floor works well. Many guides suggest at least 7.5 square feet for two guinea pigs, and more is better.
Vitamin C every day
Guinea pigs cannot make their own vitamin C. Offer fresh vegetables rich in it, such as bell pepper, along with a pellet made for guinea pigs.
Hay and water
Unlimited grass hay supports digestion and dental health. Provide fresh water daily.
Hideouts and handling
Provide at least one hideout per animal. Support the whole body when lifting, and let new pets settle in for a few days before handling.
